Automotive Service Technology Program
Offered at the Levelland Campus The Automotive Service Technology program is designed to train the student to service gasoline powered automobiles, and light trucks. Specific areas of training include: major engine service; transmission overhaul and service; rear axle and drive line service; electronic computer control service and diagnosis; steering gear and linkage overhaul; fuel injection systems overhaul; troubleshooting procedures; computerized air conditioning equipment service; shop management procedures; service of antipollution devices; front wheel alignment and wheel balancing; computerized brake systems service; and driveability and emissions service. The program also emphasizes the diagnostics and troubleshooting of auxiliary equipment such as starters, generators, alternators, regulators, switches, and other automotive components. This program is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF, ASE) in all eight specialty areas. Students completing the training sequence in each of the specialties learn skills which meet ASE standards and will be given the chance to take two ASE tests at the end of each semester. The following curriculum meets all the requirements for the Associate of Applied Science degree. The program is designed to articulate Tech Prep transfer courses. An optional plan for the Certificate of Proficiency is also offered. Program advisor is Gary Ham, program coordinator and instructor in automotive service technology.

Students may elect to complete the following curriculum and receive a Certificate of Proficiency in Automotive Service Technology- with emphasis in automotive suspension, brakes, and electrical systems. This is a TSI- waived certificate. Students declaring this major are not subject to the TSI regulations. Q. What is the daily class schedule for the AST Program at SPC? A. Full time AST students attend classes Monday through Friday generally from 8:00 am to 2:45 pm. Alternating days may include classes from 12:00 to 5:00 pm Q. How long does it take to complete the program? A. It takes two semesters to complete the Basic Certificate and two semesters to complete the Advanced Certificate. The Associate Degree can be completed in four semesters. Each semester is sixteen weeks long. The Fall semester begins in August and ends in December, and the Spring semester begins in January and ends in May. Q. Are there other degree options for AST graduates? A. Yes. Courses can be taken to prepare for a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Texas Tech University Q. Can I take AST classes in the summer? A. The AST Program does not offer classes in the summer at this time. Q. Does South Plains College have a Job Placement Service? A. Yes. Q. How much time will I spend in the classroom and in the lab? A. AST students spend approximately 15% of their time in the class room and 85% in the lab. Q. Will I be “ASE certified” when I graduate from South Plains College? A. AST students are scheduled to take two ASE tests each semester. At the end of the program, a student can possibly pass all eight ASE test areas, and after one more year of experience in the field, become an ASE Master Certified Technician. Q.
