Head Coach

Chris Beene

Chris Beene is in his third year as head cross country/track and field coach at South Plains College.

Beene came to SPC from Wayland Baptist University in Plainview. He was named conference men¹s NAIA Region 5 and 6 Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004.

He came to Wayland from Texas Tech, where he spent four seasons as assistant coach. During his time at Tech, he was in charge of coaching the multi-events, pole vault and javelin.

Beene also had a previous assistant coaching experience at Abilene Christian and Texas A&M - Kingsville. Two of Beene's decathletes won NCAA Division II national titles during his time at ACU.

Beene has coached two athletes, Stephen Moore and Trafton Rodgers, who both went on to win U.S.A.T.F. Men's Heptathlon Championships.

Both competed in the USA Olympic Trials with Rodgers in 200 and Moore in 200 and 2004. A former All-American decathlete, Beene received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in kinesiology from Angelo State.

Beene and his wife Corye have one daughter, Faith.

 

Assistant Coach

Blaine Wiley

Blaine Wiley enters his first year as an assistant coach for South Plains College. Wiley comes to SPC from Texas State University after a successful 2006 season in which eight Bobcat Sprinters earned All-Southland Conference Honors, as did the men’s and women’s 4x100 and 4x400 relays.  Indoors, the women’s 4x400 relay smashed the Southland Conference and Texas State school records, running 3:45.56 to claim the SLC Indoor Championship.  The same relay quartet claimed their fifth straight SLC Outdoor title in the event, running a season best of 3:39.54.  Both the men and women posted NCAA Regional Qualifying marks in the 4x400 relay in 2006.  Under Wiley’s tutelage, Junior Camilla Davis was the High Point Athlete for the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.  Davis claimed the SLC Championship in the long jump with a leap of 20-07, finished second in the 100 meters (11.61), fourth in the 200 meters (23.97) and ran third leg on the fourth place 4x100 relay team to earn 24 points for the meet.     

Wiley's duties include working with the men's and women's sprinters, jumpers and relay teams. He received his USATF Level 1 Track and Field Certification in December of 2002 and earned his USATF Level II Certification in the Jumps in July 2006.

During Wiley's five seasons as an assistant at Texas State the Bobcat women and men have won seven Southland Conference Team Championships. His sprinters have claimed 16 Southland Conference individual and relay championships, 112 All-Southland Conference awards, 63 All-Time Top 10 performances, 28 NCAA Regional qualifying marks, and eight school records.

Wiley also coached LaJuana Lovett to Southland Conference Indoor and Outdoor Athlete of the Year and High Point honors in 2003 and 2004.  Including Davis’s honor from 2006, Wiley has coached the Southland Conference High Point Athlete three of the last four seasons. 

Before joining the staff at Texas State, Wiley was a standout sprinter for the Bobcats from 1997-2000. During his time at Texas State (formerly Southwest Texas) he was a member of the 1998 and 2000 outdoor conference championship teams and was a two-time team captain.

Wiley was a member of the school record Sprint Medley Relay team. He also ran the second and fourth fastest times in school history in the 100 meters, the second fastest time in school history in the indoor 200 meters, and was a provisional NCAA Qualifier and ranked in the top 100 in the USA in 2000 in the 100 meters. His 6.66 in the 60 meters stands as the school record for times run at altitude.  Wiley ended his career as a 5-time Southland Conference finalist.

Wiley graduated from Texas State University in May 2000 with a degree in Business Administration and is currently pursuing his master's degree in Secondary Education. His wife Julie is a former Texas State sprinter and graduate. They have one son, Hayden Blaine Alan, born August 18, 2005.
