Head Coach

Steve Green

Steve Green begins his eighth year as head coach of the South Plains College Texans. Under Green, the Texans have complied an impressive 174-50 record and won back-to-back WJCAC and Region V titles from 2001-03. Green’s squads have twice advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament. Last year, the Texans won a WJCAC Co-Championship and advanced to the Region V Championship game.

In 2006, Green reached a coaching milestone when he picked up his 300th career win. Coming into the 2007-08 season, the SPC head coach has an overall record of 316-90 in 13 years as a head coach.

Green has had success everywhere he has coached. He has coached three different schools to WJCAC championships and has twice been named WJCAC Coach of the Year.

His coaching career began at the NCAA level. He worked as an assistant at Arkansas, Lamar and Houston. He made his NJCAA debut in 1988 at Howard College. The Hawks had five-straight losing seasons before Green arrived, but he led the team to a No. 1 national ranking in just his second year at the school. From 1989-91, the Hawks went 71-6 and won two-straight conference championships.

Green then left Howard for nearby Midland College where he went 73-24 in three seasons. The Chaps were ranked in the Top 10 nationally all three years. He was named Region V Coach of the Year a second time in 1993-94, the year his team took home the regional title.

He came to SPC after a year as an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Before that, he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at San Diego State University for five years.

Green received his Bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Christian College and his Master’s degree in education and kinesiology from Sul Ross State University.

The Miami, Okla., native played football and basketball at Miami High School where he earned All-State honors in both sports while winning a state championship in basketball. He played basketball and tennis at Oklahoma Christian College.

Green and his wife, Teresa, have two sons, Justin (27) and Blake (19).

 

Assistant Coach

Charles Harral

Assistant men’s basketball coach Charles Harral joined the South Plains College coaching staff in July of 2006. Originally from San Antonio where he attended Churchill High School, Harral brings a wealth of experience to South Plains College having coached in successful programs across the country.

Coach Harral began his career as a student-manager at Texas Tech University, first for Coach James Dickey, and then for legendary Coach Bob Knight. During his time there the teams went to the NCAA Tournament as well as the finals of the NIT in Madison Square Garden in New York City. Charles assisted with everything from team practice to marketing the program. He graduated from Texas Tech in 2003 with a degree in Exercise Sports Science.

Next was the University of Texas-El Paso where he served as a graduate assistant to two other outstanding coaches, Coach Billy Gillispie (current head coach at Texas A&M) and Coach Doc Sadler (current head coach at University of Nebraska). In successive seasons there, the Miners won the Western Athletic Conference and went to the NCAA Tournament. In his first season as a graduate assistant, UTEP had one of the largest loss-to-win turnaround seasons in NCAA history. Harral completed his Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies while at UTEP.

Last year, Coach Harral served as Assistant Coach at The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith under head coach Jeremy Cox.  His team went (33-3) and won the NJCAA Championship. He recruited for the program, coached practice, assisted during games, and supervised the academics of the athletes

Coach Harral also served as the director of the Doc Sadler Basketball Camp in El Paso where he applied his extensive camp experience from such schools as Texas Tech, the University of Texas, North Texas, TCU, Texas A&M-CC and numerous others.

Graduate Assistant Coach

Clif Carroll

Former South Plains College student Clif Carroll is in his second year as a graduate assistant coach with the Texan basketball team.

Carroll attended SPC from 2001 to 2002 and worked as a student assistant under head coach Steve Green. During the 2002 season, the Texans qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.

Carroll went on to Texas Tech University where he served as a student assistant for Bob Knight. Some of his highlights include the Red Raiders going to the NIT Finals in New York City in 2003, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Buffalo in 2004, and making it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in Albuquerque in 2005. He was also on the bench for Tech when Knight picked up career win No. 800.

The Meadow, Texas native graduated from Texas Tech with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences.
