No. 5 Texans Stay On Roll

The No. 5 ranked South Plains College men's basketball team shot a blistering 52 percent and cruised to a 93-67 win over the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen Thursday night at the Texan Dome.

The Texans (20-1 overall, 8-1 conference) especially had the hot-hand in the second half, when they were 22 of 38 from the field (58 percent) and outscored the Plainsmen 52-37.

The game was close early as the two teams traded the lead for the first 12 minutes. The score was tied 22-22 with 8:02 remaining in the first half, but South Plains used an 11-0 run to go ahead 33-22 at the 4:54 mark before intermission. The Texans would eventually take a 41-30 lead into halftime.

SPC scored the first six points of the second half and pushed their lead to 20 (58-38) less than 8 minutes into the second half. They led by as many as 33 (85-52) before settling for the final margin of 26.

Hugh Mingo came off the bench to lead SPC with 21 points, while Luciano de Souza added 16, Lu Griffin had 14, Jonathan Hall had 13 points and 12 rebounds, David Tairu scored 9, Landon Tatum added 8, Carlos Dos Santos had 4, Nick Okorie and Ladarius Hall each added 3 and Kendrick Johnson scored 2.

For Frank Phillips, LeNeal Harris led the way with 21 points.

The Texans will go on the road Monday for a crucial WJCAC game at defending National Champion Midland College.
