Tairu Leads Texans to 105-73 Win over Frank Phillips
BORGER – Freshman David Tairu scored 28 points as the South Plains College Texans started WJCAC play with an impressive 105-73 road win at Frank Phillips College Thursday.
Tairu, who got his first start of the season, was 10 of 16 from the field and made eight of his nine free throw attempts. With the win, the Texans improved to 10-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Frank Phillips (10-3 overall, 0-1 conference) had a 1-point lead midway through the first half, but the Texans outscored the Plainsmen 31-12 over the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 48-30 lead into halftime.
In addition to Tairu's 28 points, Luciano de Souza added 17 points and 11 rebounds, Kendrick Johnson had 16 points, Hugh Mingo added 12, Nick Okorie added 9, Lu Griffin scored 8, Landon Tatum had 7 points and 12 assists, Carlos Dos Santos scored 5 and Ladarius Hall added 3.
For Frank Phillips, Reggie Burnett had 19 points.
The Texans will be at home on Monday to face defending National Champion Midland College at 7:30 p.m.
