Texans Open NJCAA Tourney With Win
HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The South Plains College Texans let a 21-point lead slip away, but they still had enough firepower to escape with an 88-83 win over Georgia Perimeter College in the opening round of the NJCAA National Tournament Wednesday in Hutchinson, Kan.
South Plains (27-5) will face Indian Hills CC in the second round Thursday at 8:30 p.m., at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
The Texans led 41-20 in the first half before Georgia Perimeter closed the half strong and pulled within 11 (44-33). The comeback for GPC continued in the second half as they eventually tied the score 59-59 with under 9 minutes remaining. But the Texans quickly pushed their lead back to 9 and made their free throws down the stretch to get the win. SPC was 21 of 27 from the free throw line.
Five players scored in double figures for South Plains. Carlos Dos Santos came off the bench to score 19 points, while Nick Okorie added 18, Jonathan Hall had 17, Luciano de Souza scored 16 and David Tairu had 11.
