Texans Fall at Howard 75-70

BIG SPRING – The Howard College Hawks used a late 10-0 to defeat the South Plains College Texans 75-70 Monday night in Big Spring.

South Plains (22-5 overall, 10-5 conference) led 63-57 with 5:50 remaining in the game, but Howard (23-7, 12-4) scored the next 10 points to go ahead 67-63 at the 2:32 mark. The Texans got as close as 1 (69-68) with 20 seconds remaining when Landon Tatum banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key, but the Hawks went a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line down the stretch to pull out the win.

The loss solidifies SPC as the No. 4 seed from the WJCAC at the upcoming NJCAA Region V Tournament to be held in Belton March 6-9. Howard most likely will be the No. 3 seed.

Howard had a huge advantage at the free throw line. The Hawks went to the free throw line 31 times and made 24 of those shots. South Plains only shot 6 free throws, making 5 of those.

For the Texans, Nick Okorie and Landon Tatum each scored 18 points, David Tairu added 11, Jonathan Hall had 10, Luciano de Souza scored 7, Kendrick Johnson added 4 and Carlos Dos Santos had 2.

For Howard, Sean Watson was 11 of 13 from the free throw line and scored 23 points.

The Texans will close out the regular season Thursday at home when they host New Mexico Junior College at 7:30 p.m.
