Texans Finish Regular Season With Win
The South Plains College Texans wanted a little momentum going into next week's NJCAA Region V Tournament and they got just that with a 90-65 win over New Mexico Junior College Thursday at the Texan Dome in Levelland.
The Texans finished the regular season 23-5 overall and 11-5 in WJCAC play. They will be the No. 4 seed from the West at the regional tournament. South Plains is scheduled to play North No. 1 seed Weatherford College on Thursday at 2:30 p.m., at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.
Against NMJC, the Texans weren't able to pull away until midway through the second half. SPC led 56-54 with 14:36 remaining in the game but then went on a 21-1 run over the next eight minutes to increase their lead to 22. The run was highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers by Nick Okorie six points from David Tairu.
In the first half, the lead went back and forth during the first nine minutes of the game. NMJC led 19-18 until SPC went on a 12-0 run to gain an 11-point advantage with 8:12 left in the first half. The Thunderbirds battled back and were able to get within 3 (40-37) at halftime.
Five players scored in double figures for the Texans. Jonathan Hall had 18 points and 14 rebounds, while David Tairu added 17 points, Luciano de Souza scored 16, and Landon Tatum and Nick Okorie both added 12. Also for SPC, Carlos Dos Santos had 6, Hugh Mingo scored 5, and Philip Outley and Kendrick Johnson each added 2.
For NMJC, Louis Benson scored 28 points.
