Texans Open Region V Tourney With Win

BELTON – Five players scored in double figures as the No. 4 seed South Plains College Texans knocked off No. 1 seed Weatherford College 92-87 in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Region V Tournament Thursday at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.

South Plains built a 10-point lead in the first half but saw the lead slip away thanks to the hot shooting of Weatherford’s Edvinas Ruzgas, who knocked down nine 3-pointers and finished with 30 points. The Coyotes led by 2 (82-80) with 2:59 to play but only scored one field goal in the final 1:29.

Nick Okorie led SPC with 25 points, while David Tairu added 21, Jonathan Hall and Luciano de Souza each had 13, Carlos Dos Santos added 10, Hugh Mingo and Landon Tatum both scored 4, and Kendrick Johnson and Philip Outley each added 1.

Roderick Flemmings, a transfer from Oklahoma State, added 19 for Weatherford.
