Frank Phillips Slips Past Texans

BORGER – Willie Fannon hit a pair of free throws with 5 seconds remaining to help the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen knock off first place South Plains College 77-74 Thursday in Borger.

Frank Phillips' win created a three-way tie for first place in the WJCAC. South Plains, Frank Phillips and Midland are all 7-2. SPC and Midland will play at the Texan Dome on Saturday.

The Texans (18-5) raced out to a 21-15 lead, but the Plainsmen outscored SPC 18-6 in the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 33-27 halftime lead. Frank Phillips (15-8) increased their lead to 11 less than 3 minutes into the second half. They led by as many as 13 in the second half and had an 11-point lead with 7:39 remaining when the Texans started a comeback.

SPC sophomore guard Steve Harley hit three field goals and five free throws as the Texans took a 69-68 lead with 3:10 left in the game. Frank Phillips came back to go ahead 75-71 with less than a minute remaining, but a free throw by Jonathan Hall and another basket by Harley brought the Texans within 1 with 22 seconds left. The Plainsmen turned the ball over on their next possession, but Harley's baseline jumper with 8 seconds left wouldn't fall for SPC. The Texans were forced to foul and Fannon hit his two free throws to seal the win.

Harley finished with 26 points to lead the Texans, while Constantin Motnii added 16, Luciano DeSouza, Jermaine Bolden and Jonathan Hall each scored 9, Delawn Armwood had 3 and Lu Griffin finished with 2.

For Frank Phillips, Josh Jenkins led the way with 18 points.
