SPC Rodeo Team Competes at ENMU

PORTALES, NM – The South Plains College rodeo team competed at the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo in Portales, N.M., last weekend and fared well in their first action of the fall.

In goat tying, SPC's Cassie Vierstra (Twin Falls, ID) finished tied for first with a total time of 17.7 seconds. She had a time of 9.5 in the first round and came back with the fastest time of the short round (8.2).

In tie-down roping, SPC's Brian Johnson (Gruver, TX) placed second with a total time of 17.6 seconds. Johnson had a 9.8 in the first round and also had the fastest time of the short round (7.8). Also in tie-down roping, SPC's Cody Jordan (Hobbs, NM) placed sixth. He had a 10.5 in the first round and an 11.5 in the short round for a total of 22.0 seconds. Wacey Zant (Blessing, TX) was seventh with an 11.2 in the first round and a 12.9 in the short round for a total of 24.1 seconds. Jake Booze (Miami, TX) was ninth with an 11.2 in the first round and a 19.0 in the short round for a total of 30.2 seconds.

In bareback riding, SPC's Ross Cooper (Slaton, TX) was seventh with 139 points. He had a score of 69 in the first round and came back with a 70 in the short round.

Several alumni of the South Plains rodeo program had good opening weekends as well. Cody Heck, who now rodeos at Eastern New Mexico State University, was named All-Around Cowboy with 155 points. He finished tied for second in steer wrestling behind another former SPC cowboy, Chance Butterfield, who now competes for Texas Tech. Other former SPC cowboys and cowgirls who made the finals included Sterling Via (West Texas A&M) in tie-down roping and Lindsey Ewing (Tarleton State University) in barrel racing.

South Plains College's rodeo teams will be back in action this weekend at the Weatherford College Rodeo in Weatherford, TX.
