SPC Rodeo Starts Season at ENMU

PORTALES, NM – The South Plains College rodeo team competed at the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo in Portales, N.M., last weekend and fared well in their first action of the fall.

The SPC women's team finished with 110 points, which was good for fourth place, while the South Plains men brought in 210 points, which was good for seventh.

For the Lady Texans, freshman Hailey Nelson (Channing, TX) picked up a second-place finish in barrel racing. She had a time of 17.83 seconds in the first round and came back with the fastest time (17.40) of the short round for a total of 35.23 seconds. Also in barrel racing, sophomore Ginger Hathcock (Colorado Springs, CO) placed fifth. She had a time of 17.57 in the first round and 17.97 in the short round for a total of 35.54.

In goat tying, sophomore Dana Weiser (Wheatland, WY) placed fourth. She had a time of 7.1 seconds in the first round and 8.8 in the short round for a total of 15.9. Sophomore Kelli Lohse (Linch, WY) placed fifth. She had a time of 7.9 seconds in the first round and 8.3 in the short round for a total of 16.2.

The SPC men also had some outstanding performances. In bull riding, sophomore Stewart Kinley (Gladstone, Manitoba) placed second. He had a score of 77 in the first round and 81 in the short round for a total of 158. Sophomore Craig Wisehart (Kersey, CO) had a score of 78 in the first round but did not score in the short round. Wisehart also made the finals in bareback riding. He had a score of 71 in the first round but did not score in the short round.

In team roping, sohomore Jeremy Buhler (Princeton, British Columbia) teamed up with Steve Brandt of Tarleton State University to place fourth. The duo had a time of 7.3 seconds in the first round and 12.3 in the short round for a total of 19.6. Sophomore Chase Massengill (Santa Fe, NM) and his partner had a time of 6.2 in the first round but did not get a time in the short round.

In tie-down roping, sophomore Jake Booze (Miami, TX) finished in sixth place. He had a time of 10.4 seconds in the first round and 15.2 in the second for a total of 25.6.

In steer wrestling, freshman Ben Ramey (Ponoka, Alberta) had the fastest time (4.3 seconds) of the first round, but did not get a time in the short round.

The SPC rodeo team will be back in action Oct. 2-4 when they travel to Alpine to participate in the Sul Ross State University rodeo.
