SPC Track Runs at Michael Johnson Classic
WACO – The name Michael Johnson is synonymous with track and field. This weekend, the South Plains College track and field team traveled to Waco to compete in the Michael Johnson Classic, a meet hosted by Baylor University to honor the former Olympic champion.
South Plains had an outstanding meet while competing against athletes from Baylor, Colorado, Texas-Arlington, Sam Houston State, Angelo State, Texas A&M-Commerece and others.
Gladys Chumba took first place in the women's 800 meter run with a time of 2:24.76. Crystal Wilson was first in the women's 400 meter dash with a time of 56.35. Crystal Dickinson was first in the women's 5000 meter run with a time of 18:36.18. Rodney Campbell won first place in the men's 200 meter dash with a time of 21.31 seconds. Mitchell Driver finished first in the men's 1500 meter run with a time of 4:04.52. Bryce Brown placed first in the men's 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.15 seconds. Fred Samoei placed first in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 1:50.07. Samon Douglas won first in the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 48.39 seconds.
In the women's 200 meter dash, Allysha Wilson placed second (24.68). In the women's 400 meter dash, Karen Thomas placed second (55.08). In the women's 400 meter dash open division, Edina Brooks placed second (57.48). In the women's high jump, Asiya Iskakova was second (5-7) and Marianne Wheeler was fourth (5-1). In the men's 100 meter dash, Rodney Campbell was second (10.53) and Sean Troop was sixth (10.90). In the men's 4x400 meter relay, the SPC team of Latoy Williams, Thaddeus Gordon, Bryce Brown and Renny Quow finished second (3:10.22).
In the women's 4x400 meter relay, the SPC team of Karen Thomas, Crystal Wilson, Samantha Hallman and Angelina Williams placed third (3:44.55) and the team of Edina Brooks, Renee Shepard, Allysha Wilson and Brooke Randle finished seventh (3:58.82). In the women's shot put, Shatoya Brown was third (45-5.75), Destiny Collier was sixth (42-5.50), Melinda Bendik was 11th (33-9.50) and Jasmine Rollins was 14th (29-8.75).
In the men's 200 meter dash, Latoy Williams was third (21.66). In the men's 400 meter dash, Thaddeus Gordon was third (47.84). In the men's 1500 meter run, Michael Hernandez was third (4:15.06), Chris Salazar was fifth (4:23.52) and T.K. Revis was sixth (4:24.89). In the men's 400 meter dash invitational division, Renny Quow was third (46.43). In the men's hammer throw, Chris Johnson placed third (169-01).
In the women's long jump, Asiya Iskakova was fourth (18-1.50), Renee Shepard was eighth (16-8.75), Jasmine Rollins was 11th (15-6.75) and Brooke Randle was 14th (14-4). In the men's 800 meter run, Chicanel Cole was fourth (1:57.17) and Michael Hernandez was fifth (1:58.68). In the men's 4x100 meter dash, the SPC team of Andre Salmon, Thaddeus Gordon, Rodney Campbell and Bryce Brown finished fourth (40.40). In the women's 1500 meter run, Meagan Willingham was fourth (5:07.75).
In the women's 5000 meter run, Meagan Willingham was fifth (20:40.58). In the men's 800 meter run, Sharif Webb was fifth (1:55.68). In the men's 5000 meter run, Javier Perez was fifth (15:26.06), Mitchell Driver was eighth (15:44.74), Chris Salazar was 10th (16:38.18) and T.K. Revis was 11th (16:39.56).
In the men's 400 meter dash, Stephon Beckford was sixth (55.77). In the men's 4x400 meter relay, the SPC team of Rodney Campbell, Sean Troop, Fred Samoei and Sharif Webb placed sixth (3:14.82).
In the women's 400 meter hurdles, Brooke Randle was seventh (68.32) and Brittany Warminski was eighth (69.77). In the women's 1500 meter invitational division, Florence Jepchirchir was seventh (4:47.70) and Gladys Chumba was 11th (5:01.69). In the women's discus throw, Melinda Bendik was seventh (138-11) and Shatoya Brown was 12th (118-02).
In the men's long jump, Mike Charles was seventh (21-6.75). In the women's javelin throw, Brooke Randle was eighth (88-07) and Jasmine Rollins was 10th (67-04). In the men's shot put, Koby Parker was eighth (46-2.75).
The South Plains College team will compete at the University of Oklahoma this weekend.
