Quow, Samoei Highlight Strong Showing at UNM
(May 3, 2008) ALBUQUERQUE – South Plains College freshman Renny Quow broke an SPC record and fellow freshman Fred Samoei set a stadium record this past weekend at the Don Kirby Memorial Invitational at the University of New Mexico.
In the marquee sprint event of the day, Quow won the men's 200 meter dash with a time of 20.67 seconds. Quow, the 2006 World Junior 400 champion, defeated a field that included two-time U.S. Indoor 400 champion James Davis, former USA 4x100 team member Leo Settle, and former UTEP All-American Taiwo Ajibade. Quow's time broke a 16-year old SPC record.
Samoei may have turned in the best performance of the meet as he smashed the 20-year-old stadium record in the 800 meter run by more than a second with a time of 1:47.08. He defeated UTEP All-American and 2007 NCAA Outdoor runner-up Elias Koech by nearly two seconds.
Stephanie Simpson finished first in the women's 100 meter dash with a time of 11.77 seconds. Angelina Williams was first in the women's 800 meter run with a time of 2:11.13. Samantha Hallman was first in the women's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.22.
Bryce Brown placed first in the men's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 52.10 seconds. Darrell Roddick was first in the men's triple jump with a leap of 49 feet, 10 1/2 inches. Zach Morgan was first in the men's shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 3 1/2 inches.
The SPC women's 4x400 meter relay team placed first with a time of 3:47.44. The SPC men's 4x400 meter relay team also placed first with a time of 3:15.02.
In the women's 200 meter dash, Stephanie Simpson was second (23.79), Allysha Wilson was third (24.20) and Renee Shepard was fifth (24.58). In the women's 400 meter dash, Edina Brooks was second (55.75) and Crystal Wilson was fourth (56.19). In the women's 1500 meter run, Florence Jepchirchir was second (4:50.59), Lillian Badaru was third (4:50.63) and Meagan Willingham was 14th (5:28.77).
In the women's 100 meter hurdles, Samantha Hallman placed second (15.11) and Asiya Iskakova was fourth (16.14). In the women's high jump, Asiya Iskakova was second (5-5) and Marianne Wheeler was fourth (5-3). In the women's shot put, Shatoya Brown was second (44-8.25), Destiny Collier was fifth (38-11.50) and Melinda Bendik was seventh (35-1).
In the men's 400 meter dash, Sharif Webb was second (48.01), Calvin Dascent was third (49.41) and Lester Liburd was fifth (51.44). In the men's 400 meter hurdles, Thaddeus Gordon was second (53.38) and Stephon Beckford was third (54.18). In the men's triple jump, Thaddeus Gordon was second (49-5). In the men's shot put, Koby Parker was second (46-1.50) and Chris Johnson was third (44-7). In the men's discus, Zach Morgan was second (150-03) and Koby Parker was third (148-07).
In the women's 100 meter dash, Allysha Wilson placed third (12.18) and Renee Shepard was fifth (12.22). In the men's hammer throw, Chris Johnson was third (169-10).
In the women's 5000 meter run, Crystal Dickinson placed fourth (18:46.93). In the women's 400 meter hurdles, Brittany Warminski was fourth (1:06.88) and Brooke Randle was fifth (1:07.52). In the women's discus throw, Melinda Bendik was fourth (133-0) and Shatoya Brown was 11th (114-08). In the men's 800 meter run, Chicanel Cole was fourth (1:53.00), Mike Hernandez was seventh (1:57.56) and Chris Salazar was 11th (2:04.75).
In the women's hammer throw, Melinda Bendik placed fifth (143-04). In the men's 200 meter dash, Rodney Campbell was fifth (20.98), Giustino Fyfield was 10th (22.30), Mike Charles was 11th (22.64) and Lester Liburd was 12th (22.69).
In the women's 800 meter run, Gladys Chumba was sixth (2:21.26) and Meagan Willingham was eighth (2:36.29). In the women's long jump, Renee Shepard was sixth (18-5), Asiya Iskakova was eighth (18-3) and Brooke Randle was 12th (14-6.50). In the men's 100 meter dash, Giustino Fyfield was sixth (11.30).
In the women's javelin throw, Asiya Iskakova was seventh (84-05) and Brooke Randle was eighth (81-11). In the men's 1500 meter run, Mitchell Driver was eighth (15:46.66), Javier Perez was 11th (16:06.76) and T.K. Revis was 20th (16:56.95).
The South Plains College team will take this weekend off as they prepare to host the NJCAA National Outdoor Meet May 15-17 in Levelland. |
