SPC Enjoys Record Day at Tech Indoors

Several South Plains College track and field athletes shattered school records in their final indoor meet of the season Saturday at the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock.

In all, six school records fell including two that had stood for more than 20 years.

One of the most impressive performances came from freshman Fred Samoei, who finished placed first in the mile run. Not only did he break a 22-year old school record, he became the first SPC runner to run a sub-four minute mile. His time of 3:58.84 is the fastest indoor time in the NJCAA this year, the second fastest time of any collegiate runner this year, and is ranked as the fifth best time in the world.

The SPC men's 4x400 meter relay team of Bryce Brown, Renny Quow, Sean Troop and Thaddeus Gordon broke a 21-year old school record. They placed first with a time of 3:11.19. The SPC women's 4x400 meter relay team also set a school record. They placed third with a time of 3:45.68.

Several other school records fell over the weekend. Darrell Roddick placed second in the men's high jump with a leap of 7-0.25, Stephanie Simpson placed third in the women's 400 meter dash with a time of 55.57 seconds, and Shatoya Brown placed fourth in the women's shot put with a throw of 46-8.75.

The Texans and Lady Texans had several other outstanding marks. Darrell Roddick finished first in the men's triple jump with a leap of 49-0.25. In the men's 4x800 meter relay, the SPC team of Chris Jones, Sharif Webb, Fred Samoei and Chicanel Cole placed first with a time of 7:47.04).

In the men's triple jump, Kendrick Poullard was second (48-7.25). In the women's triple jump, Asiya Iskakova was third (39-0.25). In the women's 5000 meter run, Meagan Willingham was third (20:22.70), Melinda Burrola was fourth (21:54.62) and Jessica Kirchner was fifth (22:19.22). In the men's high jump, Kendrick Poullard was third (6-10.25) and Marlon Smith was fifth (6-6.25).

In the men's 4x800 meter relay, the SPC team of Chris Martinez, Mitchell Driver, Michael Hernandez and T.K. Revis placed third (8:10.40). In the women's 4x400 meter relay, the team of Stephanie Simpson, Crystal Wilson, Samantha Hallman and Edina Brooks placed third (3:45.68).

In the men's 55 meter hurdles, Bryce Brown was fourth (7.58) and Malcolm Anderson was 11th (7.89). In the men's 5000 meter run, Javier Perez was fourth (15:44.66) and Mike Rodriguez was ninth (16:25.27). In the men's 600 yard run, Sharif Webb was fourth (1:11.65), Chris Jones was fifth (1:12.55), Adrian Nevarez was eighth (1:14.63), Stephon Beckford was 10th (1:14.84) and Chicanel Cole was 11th (1:14.92).

In the men's shot put, Koby Parker was fifth (45-11.75) and Chris Johnson was seventh (44-6.25). In the men's weight throw, Chris Johnson finished sixth (48-0). In the men's 55 meter dash, Sean Troop was sixth (6.40). In the women's high jump, Asiya Iskakova was sixth (5-4.25), Marianne Wheeler was 11th (5-0.25) and Jasmine Rollins was 14th (4-5). In the men's 400 meter dash, Latoy Williams was sixth (48.72), Thaddeus Gordon was 14th (49.16), Rodney Campbell was 22nd (50.04), Damon Douglas was 31st (51.33) and Lester Liburd was 41st (52.60).

In the men's long jump, Marlon Smith was seventh (22-7) and Darrell Roddick was 14th (21-0.5). In the women's 4x400 relay, the team of Karen Thomas, Allysha Wilson, Jasmine Rollins and Brooke Randle finished seventh (3:58.78).

In the men's 4x400 relay, the team of Stephon Beckford, Rodney Campbell, Damon Douglas and Latoy Williams finished eighth (3:20.50), while the team of Adrian Nevarez, Malcolm Anderson, Lester Liburd and Guistino Fyfield was 11th (3:28.17).

In the women's 1 mile run, Crystal Dickinson was 10th (5:36.23). In the men's 1 mile run, Mitchell Driver was 10th (4:24.48), T.K. Revis was 19th (4:38.36), Michael Hernandez was 21st (4:40.99), Chris Martinez was 23rd (4:43.27) and Jorge Castillo was 24th (4:54.60).

In the women's 55 meter dash, Karen Thomas finished 11th (7.35). In the women's 55 meter hurdles, Samantha Hallman was 13th (8.66).

In the women's shot put, Melinda Bendik finished 15th (35-2.5). In the women's 400 meter dash, Crystal Wilson was 15th (58.03) and Edina Brooks was 20th (59.05). In the women's 200 meter dash, Brooke Randle was 22nd (27.74).

The SPC track and field team will not be back in action until Mar. 7 when they open their outdoor season at the Texas State University Open in San Marcos.
