Sundown's Heffley Signs With Lady Texans

One of the top track and field athletes in West Texas has signed a letter of intent to run track at South Plains College.

Kayla Heffley of Sundown made her decision official during a special signing ceremony June 18 at the Texan Dome T-Club Room. She was joined by family, friends and former coaches.

During her freshman year of high school, Heffley won the Class A State Championship in the 800 meter run and qualified for State in the 4x100 meter relay. In her sophomore year, she won the Class A State Championship in the 400 meter dash. During her senior year, she was the State runner-up in the 400 meter dash and qualified for State in both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay. Heffley holds the Class A Region I Meet record in both the 400 meter dash (56.89) and 800 meter run (2:14.75). She was a regional qualifier in the high jump, 800 meter run, 400 meter dash, 4x100 meter relay and 4x400 meter relay.

Her cross country team won a State Championship her sophomore year and she finished second at the State cross country meet her freshman year. Heffley was a two-time All-State performer in basketball and the Sundown team was the State runner-up in 2007 where she was named to the All-Tournament team.

Heffley will join an already strong Lady Texan team that finished second at the 2008 NJCAA Track and Field Championships.
