SPC Players Pick Up Honors
Several South Plains College men's and women's basketball players have been honored for their outstanding play during the 2007-08 season.
Lady Texan sophomore post Brittany Blackmon was named Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) Most Valuable Player and was named to the NJCAA All-Region V team. Sophomore guard Mariame Djouara was also named to the All-Region team and was a first team All-Conference selection. Sophomore point guard Ashley Frazier was also All-Region and first team All-Conference. Freshman forward Chasity Workman was honorable mention All-Conference, while Lady Texan head coach Michelle Wyatt was named Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
Blackmon averaged 16.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. She scored in double figures in 26 games and finished the season with five double-doubles. Djouara averaged 14.2 points and 5.1 rebounds a game. She scored in double figures 18 times and set the Lady Texan record for 3-pointers in a game with seven. Frazier averaged 10.6 points and 5.9 assists per game. She set the SPC career mark for assists with 332 in her two-year career. Workman averaged 9.2 points and 7.8 rebounds. She had seven games where she pulled down double-digit rebounds. Wyatt led the Lady Texans to a 26-4 record and a berth in the Region V Championship game.
For the men, SPC sophomore guard Nick Okorie was named All-Region and first team All-Conference. Sophomore wing Jonathan Hall and freshman guard David Tairu were each named first team All-Conference.
Okorie averaged 17.1 points per game and scored in double figures 26 times. He had 36 points in a regional semifinal win over Midland College. Hall averaged 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds a game. He scored in double figures 23 times and had six double-doubles. Tairu averaged 14.8 points a game and scored in double figures in 26 games. The Texans are 26-5 and won the Region V Championship and will start play at the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, KS on Mar. 19. |
