Lady Texans Clinch Conference Championship

BIG SPRING – The South Plains College Lady Texans clinched at least a share of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference championship with a 58-40 win over the Howard College Lady Hawks Monday in Big Spring.

South Plains (23-3 overall, 12-1 conference) can win the WJCAC title outright with a win at home Thursday against New Mexico Junior College. The Lady Texans have a one-game lead over Midland College and the two teams split the season series.

Against Howard, Chasity Workman scored a season-high 17 points and pulled down 18 rebounds for the Lady Texans. Brittany Blackmon added 16 points for SPC.

The game was tied 18-18 with 9:49 remaining in the first half, but SPC held Howard scoreless for more than 6 minutes. The Lady Hawks only managed one free throw in the final 9:49 as South Plains raced to a 31-19 halftime lead.

The lead grew to 19 early in the second half as the inside duo of Workman and Blackmon went to work. The pair teamed up for 10 points between them as the Lady Texans took a 45-26 lead.

Also scoring for SPC were Ashley Frazier with 9 points, Mariame Djouara added 6, Rachel Gray scored 5, Haruka Nagado had 3 and McKinsie East added 2.

For Howard, Candace Lambert led the way with 16 points.
