Lady Texans Hold Off No. 15 Midland
The South Plains College Lady Texans held off a late Midland College rally to defeat the No. 15 ranked Lady Chaps 66-64 in a crucial WJCAC contest at the Texan Dome Monday.
With the win, the Lady Texans improve to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in WJCAC play. Midland falls to 10-3 and 1-1 in the league.
South Plains looked to be in control in the first half as they jumped out to a 26-15 lead, but Midland managed to get within 5 late in the half before Mariame Djouara hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Texans a 35-27 lead at the intermission.
The SPC lead grew back to 11 early in the second half thanks to a 3-pointer by Ashley Frazier, but Midland used a 7-0 run to get within 4. The Lady Chaps would eventually take their first lead since the early part of the game when Lyrell Barfield hit a layup to put Midland ahead 48-47 with 11:32 remaining.
Midland still had a lead (60-59) with 3:49 remaining in the game, but the Lady Texans used a 6-0 run to go up 65-60 with 1:46 left. Midland pulled within 1 (65-64) with 11 seconds left, but a free throw by Djouara and a missed shot at the buzzer gave SPC the win.
Djouara finished with 18 points to lead SPC, while Frazier added 17, Brittany Blackmon scored 15 and Shaniqua Henderson added 11. Also for the Lady Texans, Chasity Workman had 3 and Krystal Davis scored 2.
For Midland, Tori Slusher scored 12 and Lyrell Barfield added 11.
The Lady Texans will host Western Texas College Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
