Lady Texans Fall in Title Game
BELTON – Foul trouble plagued the South Plains College Lady Texans in a 73-50 loss to the Midland College Lady Chaps in the championship game of the NJCAA Region V Tournament Sunday.
The loss ended SPC’s season at 26-4. It is the third straight year they have lost in the regional championship game. Midland will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Salina, Kan.
Lady Texan leading scorer Brittany Blackmon, who had 31 points in a semifinal win over Howard on Saturday, was held to just 5 points before fouling out. She played less than 3 minutes of the first half after picking up two quick fouls. Rachel Gray also fouled out, and point guard Ashley Frazier missed 7 minutes of the second half after picking up her fourth foul.
Despite Blackmon not scoring in the first half, the Lady Texans still led 29-28 at halftime. But Midland opened the second half on a 10-2 run and led by 11 (46-35) just five minutes inot the second half.
Chasity Workman led SPC with 13 points, while Frazier added 12, Gray had 9, Mariame Djouara scored 8, Blackmon had 5 and Krystal Davis added 3.
Lyrell Barfield led Midland with 20 points.
