Lady Texans Win Conference Title Outright
It was a night of celebrations at the Texan Dome in Levelland as the South Plains College Lady Texans wrapped up the Western Junior College Athletic Conference championship outright with an 86-53 win over New Mexico Junior College.
It is the first time in school history that the Lady Texans have won back-to-back conference titles. They shared the title in 2006-07 with Odessa College, but they won the title outright this season thanks to career nights from two of their sophomores.
Sophomore post Brittany Blackmon scored a career-high 32 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while sophomore point guard Ashley Frazier set the SPC school record for career assists (318). Frazier's record-breaking assist came on a last-second 3-pointer by freshman Lindsey Lawless that bounced off the rim, hit the backboard and fell back through.
The Lady Texans will be the No. 1 seed from the West at the upcoming NJCAA Region V Tournament at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton. They will play either Collin County or Grayson County on Friday at a time to be determined.
SPC (24-3 overall, 13-1 conference) raced out to a 9-0 lead, but they couldn't put the Lady Thunderbirds away in the first half. NMJC only trailed by 1 (21-20) with 6:05 left in the first half before Blackmon scored 11-straight points to help the Lady Texans to a 39-31 halftime lead.
South Plains used an 11-0 run midway through the second half to increase their lead to 22.
In addition to Blackmon's 32 points, Chasity Workman added 19, Krystal Davis and Mariame Djouara each scored 8, Frazier had 6 points to go with 12 assists, Haruka Nagado added 5 points, Rachel Gray and Lawless both scored 3 and McKinsie East had 2.
For NMJC, Janisha Young came off the bench to score 18.
