Lady Texans Get Past Western Texas 82-69

It wasn't easy or pretty, but the No. 19 ranked South Plains College Lady Texans found a way to defeat the Western Texas College Lady Westerners 82-69 Thursday at the Texan Dome in Levelland.

South Plains (10-2 overall, 3-0 conference) jumped out to an early six point lead, but the Lady Westerners came back to go ahead 28-24 with 4:50 remaining in the half. The WTC lead grew to five late in the half, but Rachel Gray hit a 3-pointer in the final few seconds of the half to cut the SPC deficit to 37-35 at halftime.

The Lady Texans regained the lead early in the second half on a 3-pointer by Ashley Frazier and never trailed after that. They went up by as many as 16 before settling for the 13-point win.

Mariame Djouara had the hot hand for the Lady Texans. The sophomore from the Ivory Coast was 12 of 21 from the field and scored 28 points. Also for SPC, Frazier and Brittany Blackmon both scored 15, Shaniqua Henderson added 9, Gray and Krystal Davis each had 4, Chasity Workman scored 3, and Haruka Nagado and McKinsie East each added 2.

For WTC, Marah Guzman led the way with 19 points.

The Lady Texans will have more than 3 weeks off before their next game. They will be back in action on Jan. 2 at Mesa (AZ) to start a four-game roadtrip through Arizona.
