Lady Texans Move To 2-0 In WJCAC Play
December 6, 2008
Levelland, Texas - The South Plains College Lady Texans moved to 13-2 overall and 2-0 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference play with a 67-62 victory over Odessa College at the Texan Dome on a night the South Plains College athletic department dropped the banner for last years WJCAC championship.
This was a game of streaky scoring as the Lady Wranglers of Odessa would fight their way back into the game every time South Plains seemed to seize control. With 13 minutes and 52 seconds left in the game the Lady Texans led by 15 points, the largest lead of the game. Odessa had no intentions to conceding defeat as they clawed back into the game, and eventually took the lead with 3:47 to go in the game 57-55. That turned out to be the last time the Lady Texans would trail as Sajoyia Griffin converted a field goal to tie the game with 3:21 left, and then added two free throws less than a minute later to take the lead.
Freshman guard Sajoyia Griffin had a huge night for the Lady Texans scoring 17 points, and adding seven rebounds and eight assists. Lubbock native Taniqua Ards made up for a slow first half by scoring 14 points, 12 of those coming in the second half. Dayon Hall-Jones added 10 points in thirty minutes of play. Also for SPC, Rachel Gray scored eight points, Samiesha Williams tallied seven, Chasity Workman added six points and nine rebounds, and Tasheena Byrd scored five points.
The Lady Texans will now enjoy a little time off for the Christmas Holidays. They will face Scottsdale College in Scottsdale, Arizona on December 31. On New Years Day they will play South Mountain College in Phoenix, and on January 2 they will run the court with Central Arizona College in Coolidge, Arizona.
