Lady Texans Win Conference Co-Championship

HOBBS, N.M. – The No. 3 ranked South Plains College wrapped up a conference co-championship with a 62-43 win over the New Mexico Junior College Lady Thunderbirds Thursday in Hobbs, N.M.

South Plains (29-1 overall) finished tied in the WJCAC standings with Odessa College. Both finished with a 13-1 records. Odessa won a coin-flip to become the No. 1 seed from the West in the Region V Tournament in Belton. The Lady Texans will be the No. 2 seed and will face McLennan (the No. 3 seed from the North) on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Against NMJC, the Lady Texans jumped out to a quick 15-5 lead only to see the Lady T-Birds go on an 11-0 run to take a 16-15 lead. South Plains finished the half strong though to take a 29-22 lead at halftime.

The second half was all SPC. The Lady Texans pushed their lead to double digits less than 2 minutes into the half on back-to-back buckets by Dominic Seals. NMJC never got closer than 11 after that.

Seals finished with 23 points and 19 rebounds for the Lady Texans, while Ashlee Roberson had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Also for SPC, Brittany Blackmon scored 10, Alana Rumph added 7, Mariame Djouara had 7 and Ashley Frazier pitched in 2.

For NMJC, Cindee Wright scored 19.

Midland will be the West's No. 3 seed at the Region V Tournament, while Frank Phillips will be the No. 4 seed and will face Weatherford College, the No. 1 seed from the North.
