Course Name: Biology for Science Majors I
Course Description: This course focuses on the fundamental principles of living organisms, including chemistry for life, cell and molecular biology, genetics and evolution. This is the first semester of an integrated course for majors in biological sciences and related studies, including the medical disciplines. TSI (Texas Success Initiative) restricted course– students must have passed Reading section of TSI prior to enrollment in this course.
Course Performance: A student must receive a grade of “C” or better in
this course to be eligible to take BIOL 1407 Biology for Science Majors II.
Course Objectives (Biology I and Biology II):
To introduce basic biological principles through an integrated approach.
To investigate the cellular processes of living organisms with an emphasis on biological chemistry applications.
To investigate the unifying themes and key concepts of the different types of organisms.
To acquaint the student with the anatomy, function, genetics and evolution of different types of organisms.
To instill an appreciation of the variety and diversity of major organism groups.
To allow laboratory investigation of topics covered.
