Jesse Day
Assistant
Professor of Computer Information Systems
Levelland Campus
Jesse Day,
who joined SPC on January 8, 2001 as an instructor in computer information systems,
can empathize with non-traditional students. He was one himself.
A native of Terrell, Texas, Day
graduated from high school and then spent 10 years working in the shipping
department for Corrugated Services Inc. in Dallas. After a decade out of
school, he decided to go to college.
"I wanted fulfillment with a
better and more professional job," he said.
He enrolled at North Lake
College in Irving, played guitar in the college jazz band, took singing lessons,
music theory classes and played in ensembles. Day also had aspirations
toward a solo music career and had spent some time in Nashville.
"I did some radio shows and
appearances and I tried to hook up with a record label, but it didn't work out,"
he explained.
During his time at North Lake,
he worked in the college's media center and met
Janna Holt, who was teaching
speech at the college, and they were later married.
He earned an associate degree in
general studies from North Lake in 1994 and decided to go into teaching.
"Janna showed me the enjoyment
of teaching, and I established a connection with people in education. I found
that I communicate well with students, so I decided to become a teacher," said
Day.
When his wife got a job at SPC
in 1994, they moved to Levelland and Day enrolled at Texas Tech, earning a
bachelor's degree in general studies with a specialization in math in 1997.
He taught math three and a half
years full-time at Anton High School and part-time for SPC.
He also became interested in
computers, took courses through the Regional Service Center and attended
national technology conferences on the future of computers. In 2005, he
completed his graduate studies at Texas Tech University in an
interdisciplinary program, combining computer courses in Math, Education, and
Business.
"I received several
opportunities in working with computers and an opening developed for me here at
SPC," he said. "I thoroughly enjoy instructing college students in the use of
computers."
In his spare time, Day has
gained roles in several SPC musicals, including: "110 in the Shade",
"Oliver", "Oklahoma", "The King and I", "Gypsy", "No, No, Nanette", "Man of La
Mancha", and "Lil' Abner". His prized
thespian experience was playing the part of Daddy Warbucks in the crowd-pleasing
production of “Annie.”
"I missed that aspect of my life
when I quit pursuing a music career so the theatre productions have fulfilled
much of that for me," he says.
Day is also
an avid bowler. In 2003, he won the Hockley County City Championship in
Singles. He topped off the 2003 season as
State Champion
in Division 5 Singles.
His 2003 singles score is currently the
state record
for Division 5 Singles. Day is the faculty advisor
for the
SPC Bowling Club.
Day has a
son,
Easton, who is currently enrolled at SPC and he and his wife have a
daughter,
Jenna, a
Freshman at Levelland High School.
