Jack Huddle has the distinction of being the only man enrolled in the
foods and nutrition department at Texas Tech. He is the Emcee of the KDUB-TV
Children's Theater. He has worked with his guitar in shows for a number of
years. He is married and has two small girls.- from the Lubbock Sunday Sun, April 5, 1953
Jack Huddle was born on 1 Feb 1928 and became well known on Lubbock's Channel 13 TV (later to become KLBK-TV) with the 'Cowboy Rodeo Show' and 'Kousin Ken's Korner.' In 1953 he emceed a local talent show "Around Lubbock" which gave Buddy Holly his TV debut, when he appeared with his original duet partner Jack Neal. Unfortunately, the weren't amongst the winners but Huddle's 'Starlight' recorded on 28 April 1957 features two of Buddy's greatest ever guitar solos, perhaps as a belated thank you. It was backed by a ballad, 'Believe Me,' for release on the Norman Petty owned Petsey label (1002) about October 1957 and reissued nationally on Kapp 207 (158). 'Starlight' was recorded a few days before Petty opened his attic echo chamber and the tape was drenched in echo prior to release. Jim Robinson's 'It's A Wonderful Feeling' and 'A Whole Lotta Lovin'' (Epic 9234) come from the same session. On 23 Feb 1959 Jack Huddle and Jim Robinson duetted on 'Midnight Monsters Hop' and another novelty 'Tarzan and Jane' (Brunswick 55141). Jack C Smith was the lead guitarist with George Atwood and Bo Clark probably on bass and drums respectively. Jack Huddle died in Hopewell, TX on 3 Jan 1973. - from the liner notes of the CD "West Texas Bop." Written by Ray Topping.
