SUMMARY

Protect life and property of South Plains College.  Perform general duty police work through the enforcement of laws and college rules and regulation. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

Experience in dealing with people in different situations. 

Must act and perform without direct supervision and to make independent decisions as to the appropriate action taken in certain situations such as infractions of college rules and regulations. 

Familiarizes self with beat and with persons living and working in area. 

Notes suspicious persons and establishments and reports to appropriate authority. 

Reports hazards. 

Patrol crowds at public gatherings. 

Renders first aid at accidents, and investigates causes and results of accident. 

Directs and reroutes traffic around fire or other disruption. 

Issues tickets to traffic and parking violators. 

Writes and files daily activity report with Chief of Police. 

Drives patrol vehicle, conducts foot and bicycle patrol. 

Conducts arrests for law violations where appropriate and necessary. 

Issues citations in lieu of arrest where appropriate and necessary. 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or certified with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education or a two year college degree in Law Enforcement with the required courses set by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Office Standards and Education and receive a passing score from the commission on completion of exam.  Minimum age requirement is 21 years of age. 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, faculty, staff or the public. 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Must possess basic arithmetic skills.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. 

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. 

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Texas Driver's License is required.
