The following is the cover letter sent to all dual credit teachers at area high schools.
July 5, 2001
Every ten years, South Plains College undergoes an accreditation visit from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). In preparation for this visit, we are looking at every phase of the school's operation to make sure we are in compliance with SACS guidelines. After examining the syllabi and grades for all dual credit classes, it appears there might be some confusion about the standards for English 1301 and 1302. The attached documents should clarify those standards. Because college grades tend to be lower than those in high school, dual credit teachers might wish to share these standards with administrators, students, and parents prior to beginning the class. These standards were revised and approved by the English department in May. For Fall 2001, all English faculty, regardless of location, will be required to follow the same standards in teaching English 1301 and 1302. The English department assigns mentors to all part-time faculty. Dual credit teachers can request a mentor, or, in lieu of a mentor, they can send photocopies of two sets of graded English 1301 papers directly to Dr. Felker, Chair of the English Department, during the Fall semester. During the Spring semester, dual credit instructors without mentors should send photocopies of their students' graded research papers to Dr. Felker. Because it is so important to South Plains College's accreditation visit, we must be able to show all teachers are all teaching the same course, regardless of where our students are enrolled. Your help, as always, is appreciated. Please read, sign, and return the enclosed Memorandum of Understanding by August 1st. Your syllabus must reach Dr. Felker by September 3rd so copies can be made and filed before our SACS visit on the 12th. Thank you for your help. Sincerely,
Dr. Kelvin Sharp
