The Fine Arts Department at South Plains College comprises the instructional areas of Art, Music, and Theatre Arts. These programs offer a broad selection of courses in their subjects and enrich the community with cultural events and performances throughout the year. In each program, the curriculum provides the first two years of college instruction in the subject and leads to the Associate of Arts degree. Most art, music, and theater courses also satisfy the Visual and Performing Arts requirement for students majoring in other disciplines. Fine arts courses are also open to persons who are not seeking a degree but have an avocational interest in the arts. Departmental activities include performances of the College Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, College Choir, and solo and chamber recitals. These events, as well as year-round dramatic and musical productions, are performed in the Theatre for the Performing Arts, connected to the Fine Arts Building. Many events are also presented off-campus at area civic and social functions. In addition, the Fine Arts Building hosts exhibits of student artwork and work by contemporary artists. The Fine Arts Building also houses part of the Marjorie M. Post Art Collection. These paintings include works by noted artists that the late Mrs. Post donated to the college. Other paintings in the Post Collection are displayed in the college library. The Fine Arts Department chairperson is Jon Johnson, Associate Professor of Music. |
