The Fine Arts
Music Department at South Plains College provides coursework and opportunities
for all students, whether their interest in music is vocational or avocational.
For non-music majors, Music Appreciation (MUSI 1306) or lesson/ensemble
combinations (MUAP, MUEN) will fulfill the Visual and Performing Arts
portion of the college’s general
degree requirements.
For students majoring in music education or performance, the coursework
offered at South Plains College corresponds with the first two years of
the bachelors degree in Music at transfer universities. Applied areas
of concentration include all wind instruments, percussion, piano, voice,
classical guitar, and double bass.
Performance opportunities, including concerts and solo recitals, abound
for majors and non-majors alike. The College’s Symphonic Band performs
concerts on campus, provides entertainment for the Texans and Lady Texans
home basketball games, and plays at commencement each spring. The Jazz
Ensemble performs concerts on campus and travels to area high schools
for recruiting purposes. Several chamber ensembles are formed each semester,
as well. Students may wish to audition for honor bands, such as the Texas
Community College All-State Symphonic or Jazz Bands, affiliated with TMEA,
or the Community College All-Star Band, affiliated with IAJE. For information
regarding the South Plains College band program, contact Lynda Reid at
894-9611, ext. 2265, lreid@southplainscollege.edu
or Bruce Keeling at 894-9611, ext. 2264, bkeeling@southplainscollege.edu.
Similar opportunities exist for singers, through the Concert Choir and
Choral Ensemble. Vocalists may also qualify to participate in competitions
sponsored by the National Associaton of Teachers of Singing. For information
regarding these groups, contact Ruby Moultrie at 894-9611, ext. 2269 or
rmoultrie@southplainscollege.edu.
Scholarships are available for eligible students participating in either
Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, or Concert Choir. Additionally, endowed
scholarships for music majors are awarded to selected students.
