Library Technical Assistant

 

SUMMARY:

Provides technical assistance in the Technical Services area of the Levelland library by performing the duties listed below. The LTA works 37.5 hours per week and is employed for 12 months each year. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Receives all new materials and maintains records for orders including invoice verification.

Communicates with vendors on accurate receipt of all materials; processes claims for credits and missing items.

Prepares new materials prior to cataloging process by Technical Services librarian.

Checks in periodicals, newspapers, and microfilm using automated library system.

Maintains shelving of periodical section of the library.

Maintains all aspects of recordkeeping in automated library system including missing items, claims, discontinued titles, and new titles.

Produces monthly statistical reports.

Prepares bindery shipment and maintains detailed bindery records.

Hires, trains, and supervises Scholar Assistant Student.

Sorts and distributes library mail.

Types correspondence and reports as needed.

Assists Technical Services Librarian in other duties as assigned.

Staffs circulation desk as necessary.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises the Technical Services Scholar Assistant Student. Responsibilities include assists with the interviewing, hiring, and training the student; working with Technical Services Librarian in planning, assigning, and directing the student’s work; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Associate degree in library technology or business and at least one year library experience preferred. Proficient with all Microsoft Office applications (PhotoShop experience a plus); excellent interpersonal skills required. Ability to maintain accurate detailed records required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents including invoices and monthly reports. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records. Ability to effectively present information to faculty and other college employees.

 MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to calculate figures and amounts and develop statistical information. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
