Surgical Technology FAQ
HOW DO I GET INTO THE PROGRAM?
Like all of the other Health Occupations programs you will need to apply to the program. The application and requirements can be found by clicking on the Admissions button on the Surgical Technology Program Webpage.
HOW LONG IS THE PROGRAM?
The Surgical Technology Associate Degree AND Certificate take 12 months to complete. Students seeking an Associate Degree will take general education courses during the Surgical Technology program.
ARE THERE PREREQUISITE COURSES FOR THE PROGRAM?
No, the former prerequisite courses have been integrated into the degree plan. You may however take the general education courses before you are accepted to the program (any courses not labeled SRGT, HPRS, OR VNSG).
DO I NEED TO TAKE THE ACCUPLACER?
No, all applicants regardless of their TSI waiver or exemption, must be TSI compliant in all areas. TSI tests are NOT the entrance tests for the program.
IS THERE AN ENTRANCE EXAM?
Yes, all applicants must take the Health Occupations Aptitude Exam (HOAE) by the application deadline. This is in ADDITION to being TSI compliant in ALL areas for BOTH the Certificate and the Associate Degree.
IS THE CERTIFICATION APPLICABLE IN OTHER STATES?
Yes, the Certified Surgical Technologist is able to gain employment in any state under this credential.
DO I NEED TO SEND MY SHOT RECORDS, PHYSICAL, AND CPR CERTIFICATION WITH MY APPLICATION?
No, these records are not required of applicants. Students who are accepted to the program will need to submit these records by the end of the second week of the program.
I HAVE A FELONY OR MISDEMEANOR CHARGE ON MY RECORD, WILL MY APPLICATION STILL BE CONSIDERED?
Students will not be denied access to the Surgical Technology Program due to a criminal background. Clinical affiliates will evaluate student background reports upon request, in order to determine if a student will be allowed to participate in clinical rotations at their facility. Please refer to the Admissions Information Packet for information concerning background checks.
WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED TO THE PROGRAM?
Applicants will be notified by mail in August as to whether they have been accepted or placed on the alternate list. Thos who are not accepted will also be notified.
