'Meet the Texans' offers students opportunity to get involved

by Trevor Bell, staff writer

The 2009 South Plains College Texans and Lady Texans basketball teams will be showcased during the annual Meet the Texans event.

The event is scheduled for Nov. 4, with the Grill & Chill cook-off starting at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., students will be introduced to the Texan and Lady Texan players, with an actual game beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Students are encouraged to assemble cooking teams to participate in the event. The SPC Athletic Department will provide booth space, tables, chairs, paper plates, cups, napkins, and utensils.

Contestants will receive free admission, 10 food armbands, three event t-shirts, and 25 tickets to the Breakfast Rotary Tournament on Nov. 5-7. Contestants can set up the booth Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning, and are allowed to cook any and as much food to feed at least 50 people.

The winners of the contest will be chosen by Texan Hall of Fame members in attendance. The winners will be chosen based on the best entrée, with the winners receiving a $250 donation to an SPC scholarship program of their choice.

Meet the Texans is a great environment for students, giving them the opportunity to be involved with both the Texans and Lady Texans. It will allow the students to celebrate with the teams, and it will help generate institutional pride for SPC.

“Students should come out and help the Athletic Department kick the 2009-10 season off,” says Joe Walker, sports information coordinator. “SPC athletics had tremendous seasons last year in all sports, and we expect great things this year as well. We would love to have every student come out and meet our fine athletes and then watch the Texans play some great basketball.”

The SPC basketball program has been playing great basketball in recent years. The SPC men’s team was recently ranked No. 1 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll.

“They are a lot of fun to watch, as several are talented enough to play at the Division-I level,” adds Walker.

Students should come out and experience the fun with the teams. It is a great way to show fan support, get to know the SPC basketball athletes, get great food, and have an all-around great time.
