'Monster House' coming to Lubbock

by Raenee Mata, staff writer

Discovery channel’s hit television show “Monster House” will be going to Lubbock the first week of May to remodel a house.

The theme of the show is to “monsterize” a house within five days.  They get five builders who have never met each other, preferably from the same city, and they have to work together to build the house with a certain theme.  The builders will receive thousands of dollars of tools as a reward, if the job is completed in the allotted time. The foreman and host of the show, Steve Watson, makes the ultimate decision whether he will give the “DONE” approval on each project for the house to be completed.

Taking a ride 'Down 1450' ... Local band eyes country music fastlane

by Devin Goettsch, staff writer

Four years ago, in a small barn, down country road 1450 the story began for a band that would become Down 1450.

Chad Johnson and a group of other friends who began playing and writing songs started the band.

During the past few years, the band has had a few of the old faces leave and some new ones come around. Johnson is still “Drinkin and playin in this ole bar”. Johnson is the lead singer of the band, and he also plays an acoustic guitar. He also is the only remaining original member of the band.  Chet Erwin is the man behind the set, well the drum set.  Erwin has been playing the drums for about two years now, and he is the man that keeps the beat. The band’s lead guitar player, is Jared Smith, he has just joined the band in the past few months, but has been a nice addition to the band’s overall quality and sound.  And like the song says, “ If you’re gonna play in Texas you gotta have a fiddle in the band.” For Down 1450 his name is Bobby Bowlin, a sophomore at South Plains College majoring in commercial music.

Down 1450 plays a unique brand of Texas country music that is demonstrated in several aspects.  First, would be the lyrical ability of Johnson to take life experiences and integrate them into his music.
