First 'Gong Show' Entertaining

 Monica Rose, sports editor

Dancers and a comedian highlighted the South Plains College version of “The Gong Show” held recently.

Dee Dee Odorizzi and Alex McAdoo hosted the show on March 6 at the PE Complex. Serving as judges were Judy Bryant, Coach Steve Green and Coach Chris Beene.

Students had two minutes to perform. Those who made it through the two minutes without being “gonged” received a score from the three celebrity judges, who then rated the acts from one to 10. When a judge didn’t like the act, it got  “gonged”.

The first act was a group of dancers who called themselves the “SPC Boys”. They where gonged one minute into their act. When the judges were asked why the group got gonged, Beene said, “ I just did what the other judges told me to do.”

The second act was a one-person dance act calling himself “CJ”. He was not gonged and ended up with the scoring from each judge Bryant scored him with a 10, Green scored him a nine, and Beene scored him with an eight.

The third act was a young comedian going by the name of “Sleepy”. Unfortunately, he was gonged, twice. The final act was by a group of dancers called “Little a”. It was hard to tell who or how many people where actually in the group, but they soon got gonged as well.

“CJ” was declared the winner for his priceless dance moves. He received a $200 scholarship to SPC, to be used for the summer 2006 or fall 2006 semesters. All gonged acts received an “I Was Gonged” t-shirt.

All in all, the First SPC “gong show” was a success and extremely entertaining.
