'Ultraviolet' an Ultrafailure
Brook Heald, staff writer
Whether it was because of
the director or just the fact that the plot was insanely boring,
“Ultraviolet” was a disgrace to the comic book.
This
film is set in the late 21st century, when a powerful race of
humans was infected by a virus that gave them the label hemophages. They
became genetically modified and had enhanced speed, incredible stamina and
unbelievable intelligence. To the government’s dismay, more and more of the
population were being changed into this subculture of humans. The people of
society deemed the hemophages menaces to human life and its survival.
One
warrior bent on saving her kind seeks revenge on those who purposely
infected her with the virus and changed her life forever. With fierce
fighting skills and chameleon-like abilities, Violet, played by Milla
Jovovich, sets out to destroy a government-made time bomb that will wipe out
all hemophages. She learned that the deadly device is a 9-year-old boy who
was raised in a lab, and goes by the name of Six, who is played by Cameron
Bright.
While
this movie was very entertaining for about 25 minutes of it, it became
extremely boring and very tempting to walk out on. Kurt Wimmer is best known
for directing the “Equilibrium” and “The Recruit,” and both of these were
better than this film. It seems that he was thinking more about the hot body
of Violet and her technique for killing that he forgot he was making a
motion picture that would end up embarrassing him horribly.
“Ultraviolet” tried to combine “X-men”, “The Matrix”, “Underworld” and “Aeon
Flux”, but, unfortunately, failed to do so. The dialogue in the movie was
annoying and actually quite funny. The action scenes with the motorcycle and
the helicopters were completely computer-generated. They should have tried
harder to make it look like a movie instead of a video game.
The
ignorance and stupidity of this film makes you feel sorry for Jovovich, who
is an amazing actress and perfect for fight scenes. But the crew behind the
movie made her look like an amateur. Fake fights and rambling on about the
same thing over and over really doesn’t impress many people.
This
film was a complete and total disaster, and will leave many disappointed. If
you want to see this movie, wait until it hits the shelves at your favorite
movie rental store. But you might want to think about before spending even
$3 on this piece.
