Texans end season in Region V finals

After sharing the Western Junior College Athletic Conference crown and advancing to the finals of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region V Tournament, the South Plains College Texans came up just short of their chance to play for the NCJAA championship.

 

On March 11, the Texans faced the Midland College Chaparrals in the Region V Championship game to decide which team would move on to Hutchinson, Kansas for the NJCAA national tournament.

Future NBA talent seen in Durant, Oden

Kevin Durant, from the University of Texas and Greg Oden from Ohio State have caught the eye of many critics and scouts of the NBA.

 

So the question is, should Durant and Oden sign up for the NBA draft?

 

Resignation of Smith brings relief, sadness

There is nobody in this area of Texas that is a bigger, more devoted University of Kentucky basketball  fan than myself.

 

I'm not even sure that it is fathomable for someone to love the Wildcats more than I do.  I have always believed that I am like a needle in a haystack whenever it comes to the "Who's your favorite team" question.  I can't help it; I love "Big Blue."

 

Lady Texans have hopes dashed

Despite winning a conference championship, the South Plains College Lady Texans ended a remarkable season with a loss to the Odessa College Lady Wranglers in the Region V Tournament championship game.

 

With the 66-62 loss, the Lady Texans ended the season with a 31-2 record.  The 31 victories tied a school record for the Lady Texans.  SPC suffered their only losses this season to the Lady Wranglers, who made the trip to Salina, Kansas for the second consecutive season.

 

Seals selected as Player of the Year

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association recently announced that South Plains College Lady Texan standout Dominic Seals has been selected as the State Farm/WBCA Junior College/Community College Player of the Year.

 

The award is presented annually to the top players in NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA, JC/CC, and high school.

 

Texan rodeo team cowboys up for new season

The South Plains College Rodeo team roped up several top finishes at the Odessa College Rodeo recently.

 

A first-place effort by Glen Allen Nash in steer wrestling helped SPC add to their success at the competition, which was held March 22-24.  Nash finished the first round with a time of 5.4 and came back in a time of 4.4 seconds in the second round for a total of 9.8 seconds.

 

Broadcasting students learn from hands-on experience

South Plains College, students have recently been working with Communications Department Jay Hoes and Billy Alonzo on filming the SPC Texan and Lady Texan basketball games, as well as some of the basketball games for Texas Tech University.

 

The students get to learn about filming, directing, and sports commentating.

 

Texans capture national championship

The South Plains College men's track and field squad took home the title at the NJCAA National Indoor Track and Field championship recently at Texas Tech University.

 

The men's team placed first with 148.5 points, easily outscoring Rend Lake (III.) College, which finished a distant second with 72 points.

 

Texas Senate looks to cut steroid abuse

Many Texas high school students participate in some type of athletic program while attending school.

 

To some of these students, these sports are everything, and they would do anything to compete well in these activities.  Some students even consider and use steroids to bulk up and try to become better athletes.

 

Time will tell for upcoming MLB season

And what does that mean?  Well, besides brown skies for the next few months in West Texas, it also means baseball season is almost here.

 

Teams prep for season by inking free agents

Even though the NFL season is still six months away, teams have already started building their rosters in hopes of making it to the Super Bowl.

 

The first step in that process is the free agency period.  Some teams made huge news during the free agency period, both for the players they acquired and the players who were let go.
