by Jason Hartline, staff writer
Faculty,
staff and students at South Plains College, as well as
members of the Levelland community, are invited to the
Fourth Annual Taste of Texas BBQ Cook-Off.
The event,
sponsored by the Student Government Association at South
Plains College, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on
April 5 of the square in downtown Levelland and will feature
live entertainment from the gazebo and fun for the whole
family, as well as some mouth-watering BBQ.
The cost is
$7 for adults, $5 for students without IDs, and $4 for
students with IDs. Children under age 2 will receive a free
hot dog. The meal includes one drink and one dessert with a
ticket that can be purchased from the Student Government
Association. Additional drinks and dessert will be available
for purchase.
“Basically,
this is a great opportunity to work with the college and
showcase our downtown area,” said Mary Siders of the
Levelland Chamber of Commerce. “We are thrilled for what the
college has done for the community, and this is a chance for
the community to give something back to the student leaders
at the college.”
The
cook-off is open to any local or visiting team of barbeque
enthusiasts that wishes to enter. Teams are required to cook
around 40 pounds of meat on site and have the meat ready to
serve by 11:30 a.m. on April 5. Registration will begin at 5
p.m. on April 4, the deadline for teams to enter.
A panel of
celebrity judges will select the winner of the Traveling
Trophy, along with two runners-up. The winner will be
announced at 1 p.m. In recent years, as many as 10 teams
have competed in the event.
Proceeds
from the event will benefit the South Plains College Student
Government Association. The event is co-sponsored by Main
Street City of Levelland.
