Single parents and others with barriers that they think
limits their opportunity to attend college can get
information about how they may pursue their educational
desires by attending a seminar hosted by the Special
Services Office at the Reese Center Campus.
The 15th annual “Go For It” Seminar will be held
on April 1 from 6 p. m. to 8 p. m. in room 101 at the Byron
Martin Advanced Technology Center, 3201 Avenue Q in Lubbock.
“The seminar focuses on getting mainly
single parents, displaced home makers, and people with other
barriers to find the resources they need to go to school,”
says Melody Pierce, the learning specialist at the Reese
campus.
The workshop includes help for finding
financial aid for tuition, childcare options, how to fill
out financial aid applications and how to apply for loans.
“Certain students may even be able to
get their books paid for,” says Pierce.
There will be various agencies that
will be in attendance giving brief presentations that will
include information about their services. There will also be
a chance for those attending the seminar to speak with the
people who work with students who have had difficulty going
to school.
“We’re just trying to inform everyone
of the resources that are available, so they can go to
college,” says Pierce.
Some agency representatives that will
be in attendance include: LEARN,Inc., Catholic Family
Service, WorkSource, Career and Child Care Services,
Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, and the
Dorothy Lomax Adult Education Center among many others.
“We help them meet the people they need
to meet,” says Pierce.
There will also be a panel of current
and former students at Go For It! to share some of their
experiences in college.
Everyone who is interested in attending
college and finding the means to assist them is encouraged
to attend the seminar.
