SPC biology professors create lab CD

SPC Biology Professors Give National Presentation

The Biology Department at South Plains College is receiving national attention because of a biology lab on disc developed by Leanna Smith and David Etheredge, assistant professors of biology.

The two professors made a presentation on April 1 at the National Science Teachers Association Convention in Dallas on the CD-ROM they created to allow students to view lab materials at home.

Vigil sheds light on child abuse

Every 11 seconds, a child is reported abused or neglected in the United States. Every 35 seconds, a child is confirmed as abused or neglected. Every six hours, a child dies from abuse or neglect.

The 204 children who died last year due to child abuse or neglect were remembered April 7 during the annual candlelight vigil held at South Plains College.

SPC students headed to national contest

Eight South Plains College students in the Industrial Technology Department advanced to Nationals USA Championships in Kansas City, Mo., after winning three contests and capturing nine gold medals in the Texas Skills USA Championships in San Antonio.

The trip to the state competition was funded by a grant from South Plains Tech Prep.

Travis Gregory from Lubbock, automotive technical information contest, and Shawn Weiser from Tulia, welding skills competition, walked way with the gold medals.

Fall financial aid deadline is June 10

Critical deadlines have been set for students who plan to apply for financial aid in order to get help for the fall semester.

 The priority financial aid deadline for the 2005-2006 academic year is June 10, according to Jimann Batenhorst, financial aid director at South Plains College. She stresses that students should start early on the application process.

“In a perfect scenario, the financial aid process can be completed in four to six weeks. But special circumstances can take longer, so students need to apply quickly for financial aid,” said Batenhorst.

Chamber concert set for April 18

Get ready to enjoy an evening of entertainment, as the South Plains College Fine Arts Department presents a Chamber recital, featuring low brass and percussion trios, clarinet and low brass ensembles.

There is no admission for the event, which begins at 7:30 p.m. on April 18 in the SPC Theater for the Performing Arts.
