The South Plains College Lady Texans recently wrapped up their season with a 31-4 record and a fourth place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament.

The Lady Texans suffered a disappointing 90-78 loss in the double elimination tournament to eventual national champion Central Arizona College in a semifinal contest.

In the first half, Central Arizona was able to jump out to a 10-0 lead after a stifling defensive performance by the Vaqueras caused the Lady Texans to turn the ball over five times. However, SPC was able to cut the lead to 12-9 after Brooke Degrate hit two free throws with 14:48 in the first half.

Central Arizona College was led by the National Player of the Year, Shaquina Mosley, who scored 10 of the next 14 points for the Vaqueras, to extend the lead to 22-13 in the first half.   The Lady Texans were not able to find an answer and went into the locker room trailing 46-35.

In the second half, the Lady Texans were able to cut the lead to 79-71 with 2:25 left in the game but were not able to hold off the Vaqueras.

The Lady Texans shot 29 of 63 from the field for 46 percent and also out rebounded the Vaqueras 36-34 in the game, but they were doomed by 22 turnovers.

Next, the Lady Texans faced Arkansas-Ft. Smith in the third-place game and fell 66-65.

The Lady Lions led by as many as 13 points in the first half and were able to take a 41-31 lead to the locker room. In the second half, the Lady Texans were able to go on a 14-4 run and cut the deficit to 49-47.  However Arkansas-Ft. Smith was able to score nine of the next 14 points and extend the lead, 58-52 with seven minutes left in the game.

SPC then went on a 13-2 run and took the lead 65-60 with 3:24 left in the second half. However the Lady Texans were not able to respond to the Lady Lions’ two quick buckets which cut the lead to 65-64 with 2:24 left in the stanza.

On the next possession, the Lady Lions’ April Williams hit a shot with 5.3 seconds that gave them a 66-65 lead and the eventual win over the Lady Texans.

The Lady Texans were lead in scoring by Jacquie Seawright who came off the bench to score 17 points. SPC had two other players finish in double digits in scoring, with Damesha Harris scoring 13 points and Danielle Wilhelm chipping in 12 points and pulling down 7 rebounds.
