With the school year
nearing an end, the Student Government Association at South Plains College
will start a new chapter by holding its annual elections.
SGA
elections for president and sophomore senators will be held on April 18-19.
As of April 11, there were two people signed up to run for president and
five set to run as sophomore senators. Ashley Martinez and Brittney Kingsley
will run for president. Leo Sanchez, Josie Rodriguez, Megan King, Krystal
Charles and David Moore are in the running for sophomore senators.
Any
SPC student can run for these offices, according to Stan Weatherred,
director of student activities. Those interested in running for office need
to go by the Student Activities Office on the Levelland campus and pick up a
petition. Those running for president must get 100 signatures on the
petition, and those running for sophomore senator must receive 50.
“Those
running were able to start campaigning on April 10, as long as
they had the petition turned in,” said Weatherred.
Those
running who didn’t turn in a petition in by April 10 were able to start
campaigning after they got it turned in.
Voting
will take place in the Student Activities Office, and students are required
to have their student ID when they vote.
