Annual 'Easter Bash' successful despite bad weather

by Jennifer Conlee, co-associate editor

Despite cool weather and snow on the ground, the 21st annual Easter Bash managed to rock at its new location at Jake’s Backroom, filling the afternoon and evening with the sounds of Lubbock musicians.

“This is Lubbock’s most legendary party,” said Easter Bash coordinator Chelsea Holloway, “and we never let anything stop it.”

Holloway explained that the event started as a college party 21 years ago, and has grown into a huge party that includes an impressive lineup of bands.

Tyler Thompson, better known as Tyler T. to his fans, started the party.  Holloway introduced Thompson as a “one-man extravaganza.”

Thompson used nine different instruments during his performance, including six and 11-string guitars, a digeridoo, shakers, hand drums, a triangle, a piano, and a loop sampler, which allowed him to layer each instrument he played so it sounded like a full band was playing.

“I’ve been playing around Lubbock for awhile,” said Thompson, regarding how he got his spot at the Easter Bash.  “And I came to know Chelsea (Holloway).  I bugged her to let me in.  I think it (the Easter Bash) would have been better if it had been outside, with better weather.  I stuck around the whole night, and heard other bands.  It was good.”

Holloway explained that, though the party started at 1 p.m., most people wouldn’t show up until around 4 p.m., and those who came would party until midnight.

Most people showed up in time to hear a local favorite, Icarus Fixed, a band that was followed by Cellus and the Loose Grip.  Other bands that were popular among those in attendance were Dr. Skoob and the Acoustic Groove and Austin-based band Muchos Backflips.

Also on the list were Tone Heavy Criminals, Moving Matter, and Falling Jupiter.

“I think the Bash was greatness, despite the last-minute venue change and looming frigid weather,” said former SPC student Winston Barrett, guitairist and vocalist for Muchos Backflips. “Also, the band lineup as a whole was better than it has been in a while.”

Muchos Backflips has been playing at the Bash since 1999,  when band members Eric Brown (drums), former SPC student Kris Lindahl (sax/guitar), and Barrett lived in Lubbock.

I got to the party early and stayed late, and it’s the most fun I’ve had at a musical event.  The music was the kind that I like…Indie, acoustic, jazz, and alternative sounds filled the little bar as fans danced at the foot of the stage.

The music wasn’t too loud or too hard; it was just perfect.  Before the party, I’d only heard Icarus Fixed, and I already liked their sound, so I knew if the other bands were as good, I would leave satisfied.

Satisfied I was.  I couldn’t have asked for better bands or a better group of people to share the experience with.
