Regents approve tuition increase

Tuition for Fall 2007 is going up for the first time since
2003.
The South Plains College Board of
Regents voted to raise tuition by $6 per credit hour during
their April meeting because the Texas Senate has decreased
funding for community colleges.
Vigil sheds light on child abuse

In recognition of Child Abuse Awareness Month, the student
organizations at South Plains College hosted a candle light
vigil.
Students came together in the Sundown
Room of the Student Center on April 3 to light candles in
memory of all children who have suffered from child abuse.
Seminars increase awareness of domestic violence

With domestic violence being a major issue today, South
Plains College recently hosted a seminar series on the
topic.
Speaker Roy Rios, who is coordinator of
community development at Women’s Protective Services of
Lubbock, spoke to the audience about recognizing the warning
signs of bad, potentially violent and abusive relationships.
Eleven cheerleaders selected for 2007-2008

Eleven young women were recently selected as Texan
Cheerleaders for 2007-08 school year after the tryouts were
held at South Plains College.
Twenty-three young women went through
the clinic on March 31 and tryout on April 1, with 11 having
high enough scores to make the squad. The contestants used
the Saturday clinic to learn a cheer and dance that they had
to perform for the judges.
Skills USA wins big at state competition in San Antonio

The South Plains College SkillsUSA chapter won 13 medals in
two contests at the state competition, which was held in San
Antonio on March 22-24.
“We had even more success than the
previous year,” said Gary Ham, SPC instructor in automotive
service technology and chapter advisor.
SPC Jazz Band to play in Lubbock

The South Plains College Jazz Band will be performing in a
combined concert with the Monterey and Coronado high school
bands for Jazz Appreciation Month.
The concert will be held on April 19 at
7 p.m. at Monterey High School.
SPC GSA participating in National Day of Silence

South Plains College will be one of 4,000 colleges and
universities participating in the National Day of Silence.
The National Day of Silence is a
project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network,
in cooperation with the United States Student Association,
and will occur on April 18.
Ranching Heritage Center hosting Ranch Day on April 28

The National Ranching Heritage Center is a place where the
Old West meets modern Lubbock.
On April 28, the NRHC will host the 37th
annual Ranch Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., an event that will
allow the public to witness and experience how the West was
