Conspiracy theories plague society

by Alex Everett, ad/graphic editor

People who believe in conspiracies may be known as a bit eccentric and paranoid.

The dictionary defines a conspiracy as “an evil, unlawful, treacherous, or surreptitious plan formulated in secret by two or more persons; plot.”  That sounds like the American government doing what it does best to me.

There have been conspiracies and conspiracy theories as long as there has been government. Some of the more recent well-known conspiracy theories circulating through the media and by word of mouth in a cautious society are the September 11 attacks and the JFK assassination.

A large number of people in society want to believe that the government is honest, and that what is being shown on TV and printed in the newspaper is the truth, bar none. But, there are always the individuals who question everything, especially when it is concerning the corrupt government that we are so blessed to have running our nation.

Obviously using sarcasm there, I personally question everything that the government is involved with. I feel that it will benefit the people in the positions of power more than it will benefit my fellow citizens and I.

More attention is being brought to the public that September 11 could have been a conspiracy, and the government might not be as innocent as many think. Some theories say that the attacks on the World Trade Center were a cover-up or were a reason to start conflict with the Middle East. Some say that it was a missile that hit the Pentagon, despite strong evidence proving that it was not. Then there are those who think that United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania, was shot down by fighter jets rather than purposely crashed by terrorists. Conclusive evidence leads me to believe that those two conspiracy theories are not true. That does not mean that I think that the government did not play a large role in the attacks, because I truly believe they did.

The idea is not that bizarre. The government had an overwhelming amount of evidence that the attacks were going to happen on or around September 11 and did nothing. Making security a bit tighter for a week or so in airports could not have hurt.

The American government claims to be all mighty but can’t detect the smallest things. That raises a red flag in my mind that something probably is not being released to the public.

The JFK conspiracy seems to be more of a tangible conspiracy theory from what I have read and watched from Oliver Stone’s collections. This incident takes place on a much smaller scale, considering that it was only one man who paid the price with his life. Well, Kennedy and the innocent Lee Harvey Oswald had to give up their lives for the government’s demand for constant power.  So, technically, two people had to suffer and pay with their lives.

With the government constantly on a power trip, conspiracies will not stop happening. Being a part of society makes it very difficult to understand all of the things that the government does. When something tragic does happen, never fail to question authority. The government does and will lie to cover up anything they don’t want us to know.
