SPC students collect items

Not too many people in today’s society strive to make other people’s
days a little brighter. But sometimes there are those individuals who to
strive for other people’s happiness by devoting their own time to help the
needy.
South Plains College students Kelly Garrett and Jayme McGowan decided to
help those who are less fortunate by helping with Women’s Protective
Services annual Help Stuff the Chimney drive at SPC.
They have posted flyers in dorms around campus
to collect needed items for women, infants, children and teens living in
shelters of abuse or neglect.
The young women got interested in the project
when Garrett’s, class taught by Marla Barbee, associate professor of
reading, had a WPS volunteer speak to the class, and Barbee brought a box
for collections of the needed items. Garrett wanted to share the idea with
students who live on campus.
“Jayme and I got together and discussed that
there are women and children out there in desperate need for basic
necessities,” Garrett said. “And most of them don’t have anyone to help them
out, and we wanted to help.”
Garrett shared her idea with McGowan and they
both got in gear, expanding the idea across campus.
“The residents of North Sue Spencer, led by Jayme and Kelly, approached me
with the possibility of collecting items for WPS,” said Lissa Sharp, dean of
student life at SPC. “I gave them sought approval and could see they were
very eager and passionate about the project.”
Needed items include diaper bags, bottles, toys
for infants, alarm clocks, blankets, brushes, dishes for women, crayons,
coloring books, toys, games, socks and underwear for children, and games,
watches,
makeup, footballs and basketballs for teens.
The drive will run Nov. 29-Dec. 16 and the
drop-off location for the needy items is the Baker Center Lobby. Those
unable to make it to the drop-off location with your items you can contact
Lissa Sharp at (806)-894-9611, ext. 2381, and she will get in contact with
Jayme or Kelly to pick up the item.
Everyone who can make a contribution to the
Women’s Protective Service Holiday Project please help to make someone’s
holiday a little brighter.
