Cosmetics: who needs 'em?
by Jacqui Streety, editor-in-chief
The other day my best friend was in Wal-Mart,
where she encountered the decay of Western civilization: a woman whose mind
had been corrupted by the unattainable beauty standards of this warped
culture.
The woman explained that she was buying makeup
for her adolescent daughter, who needed it because she was a “tomboy.” By
saying that her daughter needed makeup, she, in not so many words, called
her daughter ugly because she isn’t “feminine.” This woman is sick, and in
my opinion, doesn’t deserve to have children if she can’t see the inner
beauty of her own kids. But what does this say to young girls? That one must
wear a three-inch layer of makeup to be “beautiful”?
It
doesn't matter if you’re a sports fan or not, I’m pretty sure that you’ve
all heard of the recent string of fights and violence breaking out at
different sporting events in the past few weeks.
While violence is hardly ever the solution to anything, I think I may know
the reason for the current surge in aggression. It’s pretty simple actually.
We miss hockey.

Help yourself while

A
couple of months ago I moved into a new apartment. The great thing about
moving is that you will find things you did not even remember having.
At
the end of a good game, you need to know the last-second play that won or
lost the game.
At
the end of a good meal, you need that piece of sweet bliss that is called
dessert. At the end of a funeral for a loved one, you need that tear that
makes your heart warm. All of these things needed are considered closure. We
need closure in all the things that we do. Without closure, all of our
events feel incomplete.
Friends don't leave friends
stranded

Early
on Sunday (or late Saturday night, whichever you choose) I got ditched.
While on a night out with “the boys,” my ride decides to take someone home
and not come back. Oh, he leaves a brief message on my phone stating that
he’s going home and will talk to me later.
Christmas is near, and the hunt for presents has begun.
Well, that is for most people. I am definitely not a member of the ‘early
shopper club.’ No, my middle name sounds more like procrastination, even
though I really do not like to admit it. One thing is for sure though; since
my family lives in Germany I have less time this year, to find them cute,
meaningful, and practical presents.
I’m
standing in line outside of the bar waiting my turn in line to go inside,
and I notice a group of girls waiting in front of me, each one of them
holding on tight to themselves and shivering uncontrollably. I’m a little
cold, but not nearly as much as these, what look to be pre-teen, girls seem
to be. I glance at my friends to see if they are cold, and as I expected,
they were fine.
The
Saturday after the presidential election, 25-year-old Andrew Veal from
Georgia hopped the fence at the World Trade Center site and committed
suicide, apparently due to the re-election of George Bush.
That
Wednesday, actor Vincent DiNofrio of “Law and Order: Criminal Intent” fame,
passed out on the set due to stress following Kerry’s defeat. All the
craziness that is ensuing from the post-election fallout makes me almost
ashamed to have supported Kerry this year. Almost.

Buddy Bolden, Louis Armstrong, Bunk Johnson, Ella Fitzgerald and Bessie
Smith. So you don’t know who these people are? They are some of the major
influences on all of the music you listen to today. They are legendary Jazz
musicians and leaders, who have impacted not only their field but also
country, rap, rock, blues, and folk.
