During the past couple of weeks, South Plains College has had the privilege
in signing over three of its leading men’s basketball players to NCAA
Division I universities for the 2005-2006 year.
Leandro Buboltz, a sophomore from Santa Cruz, Brazil was the first to sign a
letter of intent, inking a scholarship agreement with the University of
South Alabama.
According to assistant men’s basketball coach, Brette Tanner, Buboltz lives
here on campus and works various jobs all around town for people in his
spare time. He is also quite popular with the students here. It is safe to
say that Buboltz has an abundance of fans, according to Coach Tanner. Since
2000, Buboltz is the 16th Texan basketball player to sign with a NCAA
Division I university.
Buboltz, a 20-year-old, 6-foot averaged 7.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per
game. Already this season, Buboltz is averaging 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds
per game.
“Leandro really likes to work,” says SPC Texan coach Steve Green, “and we’re
really proud for Leandro and happy that he is getting the opportunity to
play for South Alabama.”
This
season, the coaches expect him to be one of the best players every night and
shoot the ball consistently.
“He
will be a good player for us this season,” says Tanner. Buboltz is the
second leading scorer and the second leading rebounder for the Texans this
season.
According to Tanner, “Buboltz is real excited. He feels like he found a
perfect place for him.”
Julian Richardson, a sophomore guard from Miami, Florida, was the second
Texan to sign this year. Richardson signed with San Jose State on Nov. 12.
“I’m
excited about the opportunity to go to San Jose State,” Richardson said.
“It’s the best situation for me.” Richardson has had great success with his
basketball career at SPC. Last season, he started in 11 of 32 games,
averaging 5.7 points, three assists, and 2.1 rebounds per game.
“We’re really proud of Julian and the opportunity he has with San Jose
State,” said SPC Texan coach Steve Green.
So
far this season, Richardson is averaging 3.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 8.5
assists per contest.
Texan
Dennard Abraham signed a scholarship agreement with Towson University on
Nov. 17. A sophomore post from Baltimore, MD, Abraham has high hopes about
going back home to play for Towson.
“I
think Towson provided me with the best situation,” Abraham said, “and I’m
looking forward to going back to my home town and playing in front of my
family and friends the next two seasons.”
Last
season, Abraham was named to the All-WJCAC first team. He started 10 of the
32 games for the Texans, averaging 11.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest.
Abraham is averaging 22 points and seven rebounds per game so far this
season. He is the 18th Texan to sign since 2000.
“We’re very happy for Dennard,” Green said. “He’ll get the opportunity to go
back to Baltimore and play in front of family and friends. We’re happy to
have his talents here at SPC for the rest of the year.”
