NFL Draft 2005 - Key picks separate winners, losers

by Joe Gonzales, sports editor

The 2005 NFL draft was just as exciting and unpredictable as I thought it was going to be. As usual, there were some great picks, with some teams getting some quality players late in the draft, while there were also some picks that left some people scratching there heads and asking, why? Still, after all the picks were made and the dust has settled, it’s time for my take on this year’s winner and losers.

Rooting for the Cubs ...

Years of heartache, heartbreak don't lessen love for the team

by Jason Shipp, staff writer

The Chicago Cubs aren’t a franchise known for its winning ways.

They haven’t been to a World Series since 1945, when they lost in seven games to the Detroit Tigers.  They haven’t won a World Series since 1908.  During the entire decade of the ‘90s, the Cubs managed to put together two winning seasons.

Running against the odds

by Jared Owens, staff writer

College students stare adversity in the face day by day.

For the first time in most students’ lives, they face the everyday decision-making consequences of adulthood. They have bills, budgets and must study for hours to fulfill their thoughts that an education will one day be accompanied with success.

This adversity builds character and molds us into the people we hope to one day become. This is college life.

For one South Plains College track team member, 20 –year- old James Harris, adversity has been a way of life for as long as he can remember. This is his life.

T-Mac: The next Jordan?

by Jared Owens, staff writer

James, the 20 year-old sensation, is nothing short of phenomenal. This kid has all the tools that it takes and then some. But after two seasons, there are still no playoff appearances. He still has many years left to prove himself, but this is now. James is the only person I have ever seen since or after Jordan that I can say actually has the potential to be better. But the “king” still has much to prove before he can take the throne.
